Orangetheory Fitness Open on Park Lawn Road

Everywhere you look there appears to be someone telling you how to stay fit, get healthy or achieve that perfect “beach body.” It can be hard to know who to listen to and more so, who to trust with your hard-earned money. If you’ve fallen on and off the wagon trying to get fit on your own, or have experienced inconsistent success with traditional commercial gyms then Etobicoke’s newest gym might be what you’re looking for.

Orangetheory Fitness is a one-of-a-kind, group personal training workout. They offer a unique style of exercise that combines the energy of a group workout with the attention of an experienced personal coach. The gym, of American origin, designs their workouts with the science of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC for short) in order to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy when you aren’t working out.

Members use specially designed heart rate monitors called Ot beats (which can be used outside of the gym as well) to deliver important data to Orangetheory’s team of coaches. Throughout workouts, the Ot beats display the heart rates of its wearers, as well as calories burned, beats per minutes and splat points (a combination of minutes spent in the orange and red zone of the maximum recommended heart-rate levels) on large screens throughout the gym. Wearing these bracelets and displaying their data openly allows for both those exercising and the coaches instructing them to adjust their level of exertion accordingly and in real-time.

The use of these heart rate monitors — which can be worn as either a bracelet or chest band — ensures that every workout is personalized to each person’s unique needs without any guessing. As Studio Manager April Frost explains, “Every person’s needs and fitness levels are unique. You and I may have different maximum heart rate levels that are healthy for us to maintain while undergoing physical exertion. The level of exertion needed for me to get to the orange zone (the target heart rate Orangetheory has determined) is different than what it takes for you. For this reason, all our workouts can be and are scaled to meet each member’s needs, regardless of injury or fitness levels.”

“Our members have an orientation on their first visit with our coaches, to go over their client intake forms which detail any injuries or limitations they may have. This ensures that we get off on the strongest foot from the very beginning of a client’s fitness journey. Our clients will also benefit from having special workout reports regularly emailed to them, providing valuable data and allowing them to track their progress and complete their personal fitness goals.”

When asked why Orangetheory Fitness may be worth abandoning your current commercial or private gym, Ms. Frost had this to say, “We are not a gym but rather a specialized fitness studio offering what is essentially personal training at the fraction of the cost. Our clients enjoy an exciting team atmosphere without getting lost in a crowd, as well as the skill and attention of a personal fitness coach without the pressure on one’s wallet. With our amazing location, you’ll most likely be working out with neighbours you never knew you had. I invite anyone skeptical of what we can accomplish together to come in and give our way of working out a try — I’m confident it won’t be your only visit.”
