Orangetheory Fitness is a one-of-a-kind, group personal training workout. They offer a unique style of exercise that combines the energy of a group workout with the attention of an experienced personal coach. The gym, of American origin, designs their workouts with the science of Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC for short) in order to maintain a target zone that stimulates metabolism and increases energy when you aren’t working out.
Members use specially designed heart rate monitors called Ot beats (which can be used outside of the gym as well) to deliver important data to Orangetheory’s team of coaches. Throughout workouts, the Ot beats display the heart rates of its wearers, as well as calories burned, beats per minutes and splat points (a combination of minutes spent in the orange and red zone of the maximum recommended heart-rate levels) on large screens throughout the gym. Wearing these bracelets and displaying their data openly allows for both those exercising and the coaches instructing them to adjust their level of exertion accordingly and in real-time.
The use of these heart rate monitors — which can be worn as either a bracelet or chest band — ensures that every workout is personalized to each person’s unique needs without any guessing. As Studio Manager April Frost explains, “Every person’s needs and fitness levels are unique. You and I may have different maximum heart rate levels that are healthy for us to maintain while undergoing physical exertion. The level of exertion needed for me to get to the orange zone (the target heart rate Orangetheory has determined) is different than what it takes for you. For this reason, all our workouts can be and are scaled to meet each member’s needs, regardless of injury or fitness levels.”
